January 1986

1986 A year for new hope and dry weather.

That's a joke now.

2/1/86

Mike Bird & Spike Hall hitched out in the rain. Very boring start to the year.

3-1-86

Up to Cloggy for the first time this year. Boomerang Gully - grade III start, then off up Snowdon. Also did Scafell Pike on the 29th of Dec also via an ice gully.

Self catering meet M.Hall, P.Hoey, M.Bird.

4.1.86

Started out to do Great Gully on Lliwedd but only got as far as the Vic, as nobody was kind to us by giving us a lift up to P-Y-P. But by this time it was snowing so we returned to Pete's for a cuppa were we later overheared that several cars had got stuck in the pass. Were we lucky or not. We are now sitting in the hut with Pete Hoey who has just returned from a walk to the top of Cloggy, Spike is playing his 100th game of patience today as I write.

After a recent site visit to the drains adjacent to the toilet block it has been found that the M/H into which the foul water from the toilets is being emptied does not comply with any building regulations and should be replaced at the next work meet in my opinion.

17.1.86

ANNUAL DINNER

18/1/86

Mike Turner, Mike Bird, Ned Kelly, John Cushine did in reasonable conditions Left Hand Trinity and came down Central Trinity.

February 1986

1/2/86

Mike Turner, John, Paul and Phil after an epic night were the car fell in a ditch, got up a six, walked up railway to Trinities. Due to bad weather only one route, Right Hand Trinity, was accomplished before the walk back began.

1/2/86

LOPC (Leeds Outdoor Pursuits)

Many thanks for the use of Caer Fran, Ed, Dave W, Dave M, Steve and Cieran embarrassingly inactive, 80% of the team ascended the very challenging Moel Eilio enjoying awful weather and high winds. Saturday night : King's Head in Bangor - free for all folk recommended to those p--ed off with posing in The Padarn. Enthusiasm on Sunday reached fever pitch and 'cos it was still windy and raining we went home, despite the example set by Mike and the lads!!!!! (if still out on Snowdon suggest you try looking near Cloggy!!) Lancastrians 1 - Yorkshiremen 0

7 Feb 1986

Martin Nightingale and Phil Scraton out to lots of snow, a good deal of ice - even low down on the crags - and good weather. Looks as though it will be a fine weekend - no one else arrived for the first 'in condition' weekend.

8 February

Up to Cyrn Las - there was ice everywhere and the snow of the earlier days in the week had not properly consolidated. Much of it was blown into the South facing gullies leaving this side of the pass relatively free. There was a good deal of ice in Sergeant's Gully with about four fairly steep bulges. So we climbed the gully and up to Cwm Glas - then we did the lower pitches of Sinister Gully, again iced up and fairly steep. This was really good until we ran into the tail-end of a party the members of which sent down loads of ice, snow and ---- We traversed right across the buttress and dropped into Left Hand Parsley Fern - a very tricky ice- step halfway up - then to the summit of Crib-y-D. Then back down Right Hand Parsley Fern, a playground on the ice and snow at Cwm Glas where many snow igloos had appeared through the day - A fine day.

Routes

    Sergeant's Gully
Sinister Gully (lower pitch)Martyn and Phil (solo)
    Left Hand Parsley Fern Gully
    Right Hand P.F. Gully (reverse)

9 Feb

Another fine day. Over to Ogwen in search of more north facing gullies? The prediction around here is that everything should be in excellent condition over the next 2 days as it all settles down. See you!! M & P

Not QUITE N.facing in fact it was Main Gully on Glyder Fach via Alphabet Slabs Traverse - a good day with just two ice pitches and off by the Dolmen Ridge and down via Bristly Ridge Gully.

14th Feb

Bob's Meet.

D.Melville, Steve, M.Hall, M.Bird.

Left Hand Trinity, down Central Trinity Buttress Spike, Dave, Mike.

Sunday.

Crown of Thorns Spike, M.Bird, Sergeant's Gully, same. Weather deteriorating went down, hitched back to hut.

15 Feb

Out again! This time kids being looked after - Sheila and Phil nipped away Sat p.m. Up to Ffynnon Lloer and high traverse of the Cwm. Unconsolidated snow - but a good laugh. Back to Caer Fran via Vaynol where Bob F's meet was happening. Martyn did Central Gully Glyder Fach.

16 Feb

Still lots of ice around but heavy winds today. Up to Cwm Glas and across to N Ridge of Crib Goch. Stopped off many times to play on the ice. Saw few people once out of Cwm Glas. Weather very cold and windy but good fun. Martyn climbed Bryant's Gully. Saw Spike/Mike who had climbed Crown of Thorns and Sergeant's Gully.

17 Feb

Our final day - Monday - and it has to be short. Went up to the main Cwm below Moel Eilio. There is ice everywhere - the tributaries in the Cwm are iced up and there is considerable amount of snow in the gullies and on the buttresses. Climbed the main snowfield to the left of the buttresses and gained the main ridge. Amazingly this was the only consolidated snow we've seen over the last 10 days. It shows how much sun the lower hills have had. We descended via another steep snowfield - big winds and gusts on the top - crampons balled up all the way down. A lovely half-day here but the bigger mountains are getting a hammering.

Sheila and Phil.

March 1986

8th March

Work Meet

    1. Whole hut cleaned out. Particularly kitchen - cooker and pans degreased and decoked and wall rendered.
    2. 3 out of 4 broken panes in men's dorm replaced. PLEASE DO NOT THROW STONES AT THESE WINDOWS TO WAKE YOUR MATES.
    3. Slates over bridal suite replaced.
    4. Lead on storage heater replaced.
    5. Floors in little downstairs 'MMC' bedroom and ladies room painted.
    6. Trench on path re-dug and partially culverted. Would have been finished but...

Do NOT take even the large piece of slate approx 4'x4' from the derelict cottage 200yds up the main road. When half way through Land Rovering there and back we were accosted by irate 'Night Watchman'. Placated by grovelling and returning the one already moved.

Would have gone out but it started raining. So it was all work and no play. We are all a boring lot.

Present: Dave and Keith Melville, Colin Michell, Spike Hall, Mike Bird, John Vernon, Chris Murtagh, Alan Rippon, and Ober Fuerer Peake on Saturday. Roland is believed to be still travelling - dinner in oven.

Sue's Meet

Brave attendees: Sue and Eric, Mike Bird, Steve Gill, Bob Ferguson, John Vernon, Richard Dickinson and John Barnet (guest).

Dave Stevenson and Pete Smith ventured out on Saturday evening, John and Sara Peake joined us for the evening meal.

Saturday - at last spring has finally sprung - blue skies, sunshine and dry conditions. Scenery was spectacular with snow still on the tops. Most of the group opted for Tremadoc

Richard and John Creagh Dhu Wall and Mensor.
Sue, Eric and Mike B The Plumb.
    Eric and Mike Extraction.

Steven, John and Bob went over to Tryfan attempted a 'tightrope' on Rope Wall V.Diff EEE6! due to John's plummet to his doom, only grasped from his demise by jamming a limb behind an unsuspecting flake, having to be extracted by Bob and Steve, with first aid being applied later via the mop bucket.

Sunday - weather not too promising. Tremadoc seems the popular option except for John who is incapacitated by his injury.

Special thanks to all those on the recent work meet, the hut was looking good. I'm pleased that war has been waged on the dust mites at last. The new pillows and mattress covers were particularly welcome - not a sneeze to be heard all weekend.

Go to Easter

Dave and Keith, Chris Mutagh, Lucilla and sister, Bad Bob & Bob's Bad Mate, and Mike Bird.

Saturday - Nantle Ridge.

Sunday - Walk in the Moelwyns above Beddgelert.

We didn't get lost because of the number of trainee ML's in the group, it was so reassuring.

Monday - Home via Joe Brown's in Llanberis, Joe Brown's Capel, Ellis Brigham Capel; Dave, Keith and Cath walk in the wood above PYB. Mike, climbing wall. We didn't stop at Climber and Rambler (there were too many people to stop).

Steve & Chris (AL) Lorraine V.S. Nice steady climbing once we found our way off the Cracks.

Steve & Chris (AL) Diagonal H.V.S. Avoided a long wait on the top pitch of West Rib. Generally good balancy slab climbing in a good position.

Chris & Steve (AL) Superdirect E1 First Extreme lead for both of us so plenty of cautious movement. Two very good but contrasting pitches.

5-7-86

Dave Edwards & Alan Moore's climbing holiday :-

Saturday went to Ogwen: did Faith, Lazarus and the arete. Time was pressing, so we tried to bomb off up Senior's Ridge to Glyder Fawr. Unfortunately the mist was down, and the bomb turned into a slow walk. Ended by walking back down the Pass totally knackered. Too late for the pub even!

6-7-86

Sunday: Weather not too nice in the Pass (bleedin' cold) so did Shadow Wall and Crackstone Rib. Got two lifts, good day.

7-7-86

Monday: Got a hair-raising lift up the Pass to the Grochan and did Slape. Then Alan did Brant Direct (first HVS lead). No lift home (rich people in cars should be shot).

8-7-86

Tuesday: due to typical North Wales weather (sun and brilliant blue skys????) went down to Llanberis and did some shopping (when we worked out the direction through the mist). However, weather managed to clear at about 5PM to give a clear sky and fantastic view of Cloggy. Why do we always get clear skys after it's too late to start climbing.

9-7-86

Didn't manage to get a lift up the pass so went to Grochan. Dave led Spectre and then I led Brant. Managed to start raining after a couple of pitches but finished off the route and came back with a hitch down to the Royal on the way back. On returning to the hut found lights mains turned off and water turned off. Who was it?

Unless you are John Vernon when your mates make you walk around Llyn Idwal with a broken ankle.

19/7/86

Bill, Geoff, Mike Bird & you may not believe this but Ned (Lord Lucan) Kelley as well.

Picked up by Bill at the Druids Inn after having a look round Pothole Quarry and the small crags at the back of the mill. Follow the path up until you come to a quarry, on your left a path then leads back up the hill the way you came, this is followed until you find something to climb as there are several small crags approx 12' high. Some interesting problems can be done but don't stay too low down as there are crags further on.

Eventually picked up by Bill and then on to the Grochan for a late route.

Mike & Ned - Brant Direct This would be hard for a first MVS lead.

Bill & Geoff - Yellow Groove.

25/7/86

Arrived on Dave Graham meet, he's not here 11.30.

Last Sunday:

Mike & Ned on A Dream Of White Horses and watching John Redhead making a film at North Stack with a 'Fairy' Gnome a half black half white man, very weird.

Dave arrived eventually @ 11.30 pm via White Lion at Carrig for his first visit in three years!! Nothing's changed!!

Saturday was a typical Welsh day mist and clag down 500' so a massed party ventured to sunnier climbs, Anglesey. And in good style it turned out to be a shorts and shades day. Geoff and Mike proving the more bold successfully completing Imitator and Gauntlet. The remainder succumbed to lesser temptations and such routes, King Bee Crack, Sump, Curtains and Abbey. Very enjoyable even though the meet leader's rope technique left something to be desired and was suspected of falling asleep on a ledge at one stage.

An evening at the Vic was illuminated by such faces as Joe Brown and Ian Barnett, yes THE Ian Barnett who's studying medicine at Dundee. So here's a tip to the ladies from DG don't go sick or Ian will have you literally!!

Sunday; well as I said nothing's changed, 10.20 and various suggestions and counter suggestions fall on deaf ears, could it be the Pass?

Anyway Ta! Ta! for now and see you in '89

P.S. Good to see Mike Turner and Spike even if it was brief.

Dave G

and John Vernon, Simon Hill, Dave Edwards, Allan Moore, Geoff Turner, Mike Bird.

1/8/86

Special work meet for rewiring.

Chris and Lilian Shannon, Glen, Bill and Dave M with hut warden Alan R cracking the whip. All now working I think. Well done! We are now going home as it's raining and we are fu****.

Bill.

8/8/86

After a world-beating hitchout Spike and Mike made the hut. After much discussion an ascent of Main Wall in 'big boots' is to be made. Please note the date, if we're not back by the 10th will someone call out the rescue.

It's ok we made it back. After an early start we hit the road and hitched up to the Boulders in the Pass. Cyrn Las loomed up somewhere high in the mist. The walk in was hard, no Sherpas required. We reached the base of the route and racked up. Spike had no gear so a bowline had to do with a tape for leg loops, which hung around his knees, he swore it was a perfect fit. The mist came down and the water poured off the rock but we did not worry, nor did Spike as I had the first lead. Desperate E5 4b was my grade, the book's HS 4a. Spike pulled on his famous alpine duvet (M & S), it was getting serious. Spike led the pitch, another soaking, cold and serious pitch but Spike was in form, the way he moved over the rock like a gibbering girl guide was a sight to savour, I followed in a similar manner. The next pitch was up to me however, I did plead with Spike to show his age, he burped and told me to go and take a ride on Alan's bike, a fate worse than death. It was the most serious and frightening pitch of the year, a smooth slab with tiny holds which I had to dyno for, it was like climbing Aber Falls, Right Wall is miles safer. I made it and Spike followed leaving a rock 7 behind, if anyone finds it please pass it on. The next pitch was the hardest in my opinion, I got stuck on a spike unable to move, so I put a runner in and went for it E6 4c a tiny pinch grip was the hold available a truly desperate hold in an amazing position, if we could see it, just like the Alps. Spike followed he looked shaken, he used up all his chalk but his big boots proved better than poncy fire's. Would we survive? we wondered, only two pitches between us and the top, we had to go on, but Spike had started to bivvy and thinking of better places, in bed with his loving sexy Delith but he was in love so I let him off. Spike left the belay ledge the pitch of his life it was truly an amazing pitch across a blank slab except for the hand rails - the only piece of dry rock on the route - just brilliant. I followed through and climbed to the summit - we had done it, we both cried with joy. Spike told me as he handed me a peanut butter sandwich, "I will have to stop taking these risks", I agreed but the Alps and the Padarn are the next saga.

Mike T

9/8/86

Went canoeing round the Orme, great fun, just me left, Spike's love sick so has gone home for a ----! Please do not ask Spike about his fantasies. Going climbing tomorrow won't that be a change!

September 1986

7/9/86

Came - fell off - went home.

L Hand water disconnected.

8/9/86

Thought I'd pay a quick visit to the hut before term starts again. It's hard to find enough time to get out here (we've only got a twelve week holiday!)

A quick run up Snowdon on Monday.

Simon H, Ruth T

P.S. Dear Mr Bird I didn't take too kindly to your "nancy tennis player" jibe about me. It's all part of an intensive training schedule for when I make my return to the climbing scene. Time will tell.

14/9/86

Made it at last Chris - mum Melville at Caer Fran.

Just off to Pete's Eats for a Big Jim.

I like the decor in the men's bedroom, you need curtains on the windows carpets on the floor to keep my little lads warm (only joking)

Amy Melville.

Alright I won't bring her again. I just wonder if a Big Jim will satisfy her!

^Brave man!

K.M.

I Hope so.

A.M.

14.9.86

Jones family arrived 5.30 on a hot Welsh evening - they couldn't believe their luck! Monday was again good and Becky aged 4½ managed to get to the top of Lliwedd via the Watkin Path - Lliwedd has now been renamed Becky's Mountain and the Ordnance Survey have been informed. She also had her first fall right from the top of a Caer Fran bunk bed - the mountain rescue team managed to patch her up. The next day less adventurous we made Black Rock Sands and a great day by the seaside. Wednesday dawned cloudy but an undaunted Jones group headed over to Crafnant where a wet lunch was followed by a disappointment - rowing boats for fishers only.

Thursday again bright and sunny saw Lew chasing the Crane Bros plus bikes duo. Crib Goch - met up with wife and two veg on Snowdon summit - they sneaked up by train. However they made up for it slightly by a family descent of zig-zags and Pyg Track to Pen y Pass.

Friday - last day - superb again - what has Lew done this year to deserve such heavenly favour!! Off to Anglesey sailing, then on to Lakes to meet Graham at Langdale. A fantastic week.

19/9/86

Andy Stewart. The completion of the Plas y Brenin Mini Triathalon was made in about 3hrs 20 m:-

1. A 34 mile bike ride from Capel down the A5, Bethesda, Llanberis, and up the pass!! back to the Brenin. 2. 5 mile fell run up to Moel Siabod summit and back. 3. 2 mile canoe down the twin lakes and return! Glorious day, weather wise, and I suppose tomorrow I'll think it's all been worthwhile!

Simon Rickett

Superb weather on Saturday. Notable climb by Mike Bird and Bill Sutherland Cenotaph Corner - Llanberis. Myself, Keith and John had a walk along the North Ridge. Enjoyed doing my first stint (not before time you may say).

R.E.Nock.

10.10.86

Lovely weekend climbing and walking - but one moan! I'd like it put on record that I find the 'men's dorm decor' pretty disgusting and degrading and that it's not just women who object to this sexist trash. Isn't it a bit unnecessary these days.

M Nightingale.

18/10/86

Lichfield MC

Saturday - Idwal Slabs assorted routes in rain. Ridgewalk on 2000' skyline from cottage to Llyn Dur Arddu and back.

Sunday - wind, no rain, off to Dinas Cromlech in hope

Some hope!

27/10/86

Steve Gille and family. Half term, Ann's on duty, I'll be off, the weather's been good "Hey kids let's go to the hut next week for a couple of days and some tops", "Yer dad that sounds great" is the reply from Jenny (9yrs) and Sara (6yrs). So here we are, the rain's bouncing off the windows with mist to lake level (not a day for going high) but tomorrow will be better so it's wet kit and wellies and off to the village, no not to Joe Brown's or Pete's Eats but for a low level afternoon stroll along the lake to Dolbadarn Castle via the swing park and back with but one stop for post cards for Mum and Gran.

25/10/86

Awoke to find the weather no better (ah well that's Wales) and Sara wants to get out and climb a mountain. So it's delaying tactics all morning in the hope of an improvement, but no sign, so off to Pen y Pass into wet kit and trudge up the Miner's towards Gallt y Wenallt the days goal. After an hour the rain stopped and the cloud lifted to about 2500' leaving our top clear with good views making Gallt y Wenallt an interesting place to visit. The day was rounded off with a visit to Pete's Eats (I couldn't resist it).

29/10/86

It's stopped raining and we can see the village. I said it would get better. Off to Aberdaron this morning, may do Mynydd Mawr en route.
